The University of Houston began in 1927 as Houston Junior College, with classes held at a local high school. It grew into a four-year university and became a state institution in 1963.
Houston's university story is closely connected to the surrounding city. Cougar traditions give the campus its own identity within that metropolitan setting, from school colors to the shared rituals of game day.
